There should probably be a transition between the next three scenes, but I haven't written one yet.

The door flew open to reveal Leifr, practically glowing.

“You sent for me!”

“Yes, darling.” She gestured for him to close the door behind him, which he quickly did before flinging himself on his hands and knees before her desk.

“I already have a chair,” Sigrid said, amused.

Leifr quickly straightened up, though he remained on his knees, which was perfectly acceptable to Sigrid. “Y-you are thinking of allowing m-me to serve, a-aren’t you, Princess?”

“As a matter of fact, I am.” She tapped her chin thoughtfully. “But I haven’t decided yet if I want to see you in my bedchamber or my dungeon. Any special requests I should take into consideration?”

Leifr quivered, his eyes shining. “O-oh, I… I would be most grateful, I am most grateful for your illustrious-“

It annoyed Sigrid when he became overly sycophantic. “The dungeon then.”

He almost managed to bounce on his knees. “Y-yes! Thank you, Princess!”

“I’ll see you later tonight then. I haven’t decided when. But if I were you, I would be there when I arrive.”

Leifr sprang to his feet and saluted, which almost made her laugh. “Y-your will is my command! Thank you!”

And before she could dismiss him, he all but flew out of the room.

Sigrid sighed. “Karl.”

“Yes, my lady.” She was very grateful that he did not even appear to be holding back laughter when he re-entered the room, though she wouldn’t have blamed him if he had.

“If Leifr arrives as early to the dungeons as I suspect he will, at least make sure there is some bread and water for him.”

“It will be done, my lady.” Karl bowed. “Whom do you wish to see next?”

“Sigrid.” Wolfgang crossed his arms as he nodded to her, which coming from anyone else she might have considered confrontational, but most of Wolfgang’s neutral body language looked defensive.

“Good morning, Wolfgang.” Sigrid smiled.

“I see you have sent for Sasha again.” As usual, Wolfgang didn’t waste words. “So either your appetite for him is truly endless or you have some other reason to speak with him.”

She sighed. “I suppose I needn’t bother hiding my business from you. Speaking frankly…” Sigrid hesitated, trying to find the most truthful words that would not alarm Wolfgang. “There have been some questions that have arisen about Sasha’s past lately. I am hoping to settle them.”

“I see.”

Sigrid had expected perhaps some relief, but that wasn’t Wolfgang. The idea that there was something questionable about Sasha’s past had if anything darkened his countenance.

“It isn’t… criminal, is it?”

Surprised, Sigrid shook her head. “Why would you think that?”

“Well, when you spoke in such vague terms, naturally I…” Wolfgang went a little pink about the ears. “I don’t know. It only occurred to me recently. Such little things seem to surprise and delight him, as though he’d been locked up for years. But this is not why you sent for me.”

“No,” Sigrid confirmed. “I was thinking of your company in the near future.”

Wolfgang nodded sharply. “When it is your pleasure, Sigrid. I know Leifr often exhausts you.”

She laughed, a little. “That he does! And it would be terribly boring for you to wait around simply to hold me, wouldn’t it?”

“…I wouldn’t object.”

Sigrid blinked, a bit surprised.

Wolfgang smiled faintly. “I do have some feeling in me. And my needs are not quite so… insistent as some of the others would have me believe theirs are.”

Sigrid smiled back. “Keep talking like that and I’d almost believe you wanted to be my consort.”

A pause, but then Wolfgang shook his head. “I do love you, Sigrid,” he said gently. “But as your consort, I fear your love would overwhelm me.”

Sigrid held out her hand, and he kissed it. “Thank you for your consideration,” she said, perhaps a bit more tartly than was entirely fair.

“You know it’s true too,” Wolfgang said, unrepentant. “Many of your pleasures do not suit me.”

“Ah, but the ones that do suit you beautifully.”

Wolfgang smiled. “It pleases me that you think so. Tomorrow, then? Unless you truly long for my tender embrace.”

Sigrid laughed. “Tomorrow will be fine, but I will ring Karl for you if I change my mind.”

Wolfgang threaded his fingers through hers, and squeezed her hand lightly. “I hope Sasha will not disappoint you.”

Her stomach twisted. “I hope so, too.”
