Sigrid stretched her arms over her head and yawned. She'd done more than enough paperwork for the day, surely. All major letters and requests addressed or at least properly sorted, some diverted to her mother and some to Lotte.
Besides, her concentration was starting to waver.
"Princess?" Karl glanced at her desk. "Will that be all for the day?"
She smiled at her valet. "All of this, anyway. Could you go down to the seraglio and fetch someone for me, please?"
"Certainly. Do you have a man in mind or do you prefer to be surprised?"
Sigrid wrinkled her nose. "No surprises today, I think. While you're there, please make inquiries about Nikolaj. I'd like to know if he's showing signs of actual repentance or if I'm going to have to give him another stern talking-to.”
Karl inclined his head. "It will be done. Who is it you wished me to fetch?"
"Sasha. I'd like to get an idea how he's settling in." She had a few other ideas as well, but first things first.
By the time they returned, Sigrid had stretched out in her chair, swinging her legs over one armrest as she pretended to study a pair of menus.
"Princess Sigrid, I have brought you Sasha."
"Thank you, Karl, that will be all for now."
Sasha bowed when she glanced up, one hand across his chest. "What is your wish, Princess?"
Sigrid crooked her finger. "Come here."
He stood with a smile, and approached her desk. "How was your day?"
"Much better now." She held out her hand, and Sasha took it. "And how are the other boys treating you?"
"Fine." Sasha glanced at the menus underneath her hand. "There haven't been any problems."
"Really?" Sigrid studied his face, wondering what he was hiding. "Not even with Nikolaj?"
"He dislikes me, but I know how to deal with men like him." Sasha met her eyes and smiled sweetly. "The others were nice enough, just as you said."
"And your accommodations are satisfactory?"
He laughed. "Lady Sigrid, until only a few days ago I slept on a marble floor. I don't miss it."
"Good."
