As it turned out, whipping Leifr until he broke down and cried was exactly the stress relief that Sigrid needed.

“T-thank you, Princess…” Leifr whimpered, and she tugged lightly on his dark hair.

“Good boy. Can you stand to stay like this while I wash the blood off your back or should I loosen your shackles?”

“A-aah, I… I c-couldn’t a-ask you for something so…”

Sigrid sighed. She should have known better than to ask him to make decisions after such a relatively intense session. Unlocking both his shackles, she let him fall to his knees.

“I’ll be right back.” She felt him grasp hold of her ankle and shook him off, walking to the other side of the dungeon to pick up the pail of water and cloth.

It was as much for her as for him, this ritual of careful cleaning that went on in relative silence. It brought her back from whatever heightened state she sometimes entered when inflicting true torment on a willing man, and relaxed the small fearful part of her that often bubbled to the surface afterwards.

After she had finished taking care of his wounds, Sigrid ran a comb through his long straight hair, taking out all the knots before kissing his cheek and letting him lay his head in her lap.

He was such a tall lanky figure when he stood, it was always interesting to see him laid out beside her; a prize stallion in repose.

“L-Lady Sigrid?”

Brought out of her reverie, Sigrid glanced down at him. He had to be coming back into his senses now if he was using her name. “Yes?”

“I-I’ve been wondering… Did you know Sasha? B-before he came to us.”

That was an unusually perceptive question from Leifr, and one she wasn’t sure how to answer.

“Not very well,” she said, after a moment. “We had met… briefly. And long ago.”

A faint smile played around Leifr’s mouth. “I-it’s only that… you were so attentive when he first came. They said you were infatuated like w-with Sebastian, but I d-didn’t think it was the same… Sebastian b-boasted…”

“Well yes, the two of them are quite different.”

“I l-like Sasha… he l-listens when I talk…” Leifr really did smile then.

Sigrid smiled back. “That pleases me very much. More people should pay attention to you.”

Leifr beamed.

She escorted him back to the seraglio doors, where she met Mikael and gave him careful instructions to make sure Leifr didn’t suffer infection. And to send Wolfgang at his earliest convenience.
