The closet was technically still Sigrid’s, but since Klaus loved it so, she’d given him free rein over it as long as he took care of what was inside.

They began with a blonde wig for Sigrid and a tight cap for Klaus to tuck most of his red hair under.

“The point,” Sigrid reminded Klaus as they looked through clothing, “is not to stand out.”

“I know! But you can still wear lacy underwear underneath?” Klaus grinned, holding up a tiny scrap of fabric that barely seemed to qualify as clothing.

Sigrid swatted his arm. “I don’t need you selecting my underwear, cheeky.”

Eventually they managed to find what Klaus swore was passable dress for a commoner, if slightly out of fashion. Sigrid pulled on a black vest embroidered with silver thread over a white blouse with a brooch, before closing the vest by threading chains in a criss-cross pattern across the front. There was an tartan apron to go over the skirt, and a velvet belt with gold ornaments.

“Wait, wait!” Klaus grinned. “It’s not complete without the little cap!”

The black cap had a little tassel-tail on it, and was carefully placed atop Sigrid’s wig.

Peering at herself in the mirror, Sigrid shook her head. “It’s a good thing the bangs on this hide my dark eyebrows.”

“You look cute!” Klaus insisted, though Sigrid noted he was wearing a jacket that looked worse for wear over a plainer shirt and trousers.

Klaus sighed, looking down at his fraying sleeve. “Yeah, Sasha pointed out I had plenty of my own old clothes that made more sense than anything else. And my hair’s the most noticeable thing about me anyway so… I look like your servant.”

Sasha stepped into view. It seemed he had simply changed into a plain velvet jacket with silver buttons and longer trousers.

“Oh, not fair!” Klaus scowled. “Now I’m servant to both of you!”

“You’re the one who will be guiding us through the city,” Sasha said. “You can have my jacket instead if you want, I don’t care.”

Klaus sighed. “Your hair’s too nice and long, it’d look weird with a ratty old jacket. Fine. I’m your street-smart, down on his luck cousin, showing you two into seedy pubs and dens of iniquity.”

Sigrid would have ruffled his hair, but ruffling the cap wasn’t nearly as satisfying, particularly when it had been so difficult getting Klaus’ curls tucked away in the first place. “And I appreciate my smart cousin.”

“You’d better!”

Klaus instructed the carriage driver to let them off near the theater, where they could alight along with plenty of other carriages, and continue on foot towards the pubs Sebastian was known to frequent.

Klaus climbed out first, followed by Sasha. When Sigrid stepped out, they both held their hands out to assist her. Amused, Sigrid put her right hand in Klaus’s and her left in Sasha’s and took the step down to the street.

“If I’m the servant, I should serve,” Klaus mumbled, while Sasha smiled innocently.

“So serve me,” Sigrid laughed. “Which way to the pubs?”
