Introduction to Sigrid's Sister
Feb. 2nd, 2019 12:13 pmThis comes next in my document though it's possible it'll be moved or changed eventually, so I'm not officially numbering it. However this was definitely intended to be the first appearance of Princess Charlotte (and some of it is brand new).
"Siri!"
Sigrid turned just in time to see a cloud of red hair before Lotte nearly knocked her over in a tight hug. She laughed and wrapped her free arm around her sister's shoulders. "Missed me, Lotte?"
Lotte pulled back just enough to make an indignant face at her. "You didn't even tell me you were going! And if you'd just explained yourself I would have been behind you completely, you know! I don't like finding these things out from Gudmundr after the fact, Siri!"
"Time was of the essence, but I'm sorry if I made you worry. Though I might point out that I had no idea you were going off for three whole days to… what was the phrase? 'Survey our lands' with Fredrik."
"Well, I don't have to tell you everything," Lotte said loftily, then broke into another smile.
Sigrid snorted and released her.
Sasha was looking vaguely nervous, perhaps wondering if he was in the way, which she couldn't have.
"Lotte, I don't believe you've met the latest addition to my personal guard." She held out her hand to Sasha, who took it and bowed. Quick learner: she liked him more every day. "This is Sasha. Sasha, my sister, the Princess Charlotte."
Lotte nodded and smiled. "I'm pleased to meet you, Sasha. My dear sister is notoriously fussy about who she accepts tribute from, so I think you must be exceptional."
Sasha's cheeks went pink. "Thank you, your highness."
She clapped her hands together. "He's blushing! I don't believe it! Where did he come from, Siri?"
"I seem to recall a certain girl who used to blush and cover her eyes at the merest hint of flesh," Sigrid retorted, closing her hand around Sasha's in what she hoped was a reassuring gesture.
"I didn't mean it as an insult," Lotte said blithely. "It's just different. But you always seem to attract the unusual, Siri.”
“That’s because convention prefers you.”
“Need I remind you how many of my men you rejected first?” Lotte laughed. “Admit it, darling, you like your reputation!”
“I never pretended otherwise.” Sigrid smiled. “Except perhaps to Mother, but well…”
“Mother tends to have that effect,” Lotte finished, and smiled back. “I think she’s more pleased with you than she pretends to be, though.”
Sigrid snorted. “If she’s pleased with me at all these days that would be more than she lets on.”
“Well…” Lotte shrugged. “I’ll just say that I’ve been compared unfavorably to you more than once in private.”
“That’s because she’s trying to motivate you, not because she actually prefers me in any way. You’re the heir.”
“Think what you like, but you know Mother loves us both,” Lotte said calmly.
